Nielsen ratings are audience measurement systems developed by Nielsen Media Research, in an effort to determine the audience size and composition of television programming in the United States. Nielsen Media Research was founded by Arthur Nielsen, who was a market analyst whose career had begun in the 1920s with brand advertising analysis and expanded into radio market analysis during the 1930s, culminating in Nielsen ratings of radio programming, which was meant to provide statistics as to the markets of radio shows. In 1950, Nielsen moved to television, developing a ratings system using the methods he and his company had developed for radio. That method has since become the primary source of audience measurement information in the television industry around the world.

What is so special about the Nielsen ratings company that it should get to keep spyware on others' computers?
Q. During a free trial of a spyware/adware detection and removal program, I came across a small number of spyware/adware programs that had been installed by different parties on the computer I was using. I successfully removed all of them but one. The one one which I did not remove, came with an advisory not to remove it because it had been placed by a company connected with the Nielsen ratings company and therefore collected valuable information. I am not all that impressed with the Nielsen ratings company. I furthermore resent claims that it should have exclusive rights to intrusion on the privacy of others. A local branch of a Nielsen-connected company once placed a bogus phone survey to my home one evening. I traced the call back to… [cont.]

A. So get rid of it. Just because you get a message suggesting its important doesn't mean it is. If you dont want to be sending them information, dont. That message is probably just to try and persuade people to leave their spyware alone. If it came bundled with other software, removing it may stop that software from working... but to be honest, any software that contains spyware is not worth using anyway, in my opinion.

how can i find weekly nielsen ratings for my tv show?
Q. Hi, I wanted to check up on the how NBC's Journeyman is doing in the weekly nielsen ratings. the nielsenmedia.com website didn't reveal it because it wasn't in the top ten. however, i am certain they are released. Where can i see weekly nielsen ratings of this shows? and how do i go about judging that as well? For a new show to be kept what kind of ratings are needed usually? and what is a decent rating a show must maintain to survive longest?

Why are Nielsen ratings important if there is a small sample size determining it?
Q. Hey guys, I don't understand what everybody's obsession with Nielsen ratings is. Nielsen ratings are compiled by a very small sample size of people. In your neighborhood, I'm sure there is a very, very small sample size to compile ratings. It's one thing if almost everyone contributed to the ratings. But how can someone say that more people watched a show of Lost for example, than Grey's Anatomy? You have to be one of the very select Americans to determine that. Grr, that really grinds my gears.

A. The sample size of the Nielsen survey is no smaller than the samples drawn for those statistical studies done in medicine and other fields. The sample pool is weighted demographically and geographically to reflect trends in the overall population. If it were shown that demography or geography were not the major variables in viewing preference, the Nielsen survey would be inaccurate.
