Okay here's the biggest rule of all - if you want it that way go for it... If you can take a swatch of the ottoman to the store where they have the tray to see the colour flow and see how you feel, but at the end of the day its what you want to do - thats most important. Has colours they go , if you can visualise how lighting - daylight, candle, lamps...would effect it and go for it.
