Corrosion is the disintegration of an engineered material into its constituent atoms due to chemical reactions with its surroundings. In the most common use of the word, this means electrochemical oxidation of metals in reaction with an oxidant such as oxygen. Formation of an oxide of iron due to oxidation of the iron atoms in solid solution is a well-known example of electrochemical corrosion, commonly known as rusting. This type of damage typically produces oxide(s) and/or salt(s) of the original metal. Corrosion can also refer to other materials than metals, such as ceramics or polymers. Although in this context, the term degradation is more common.

In other words corrosion is the wearing away of metals due to a chemical reaction.

Many structural alloys corrode merely from exposure to moisture in the air, but the process can be strongly affected by exposure to certain substances (see below). Corrosion can be concentrated locally to form a pit or crack, or it can extend across a wide area more or less uniformly corroding the surface. As corrosion is a diffusion controlled process, it occurs on exposed surfaces. As a result, methods to reduce the activity of the exposed surface, such as passivation and chromate-conversion can increase a material's corrosion resistance. However, some corrosion mechanisms are less visible and less predictable.

Rust, the most familiar example of corrosion. Corrosion on exposed metal.

How does chromium protect steel from corrosion?
Q. After the 1930s, chromium replaced nickel for corrosion resistance and appearance on car bumpers and trim...these old bumpers are still just as shiny as ever...how does the chromium protect the steel from corrosion?
Asked by Big T - Thu Apr 23 02:02:51 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The chromium is electroplated to the base steel. Chromium doesn't oxidize anywhere as easily as steel and is much harder and with a higher boiling point than iron. Chromium is passivated by oxygen, forming a thin protective oxide surface layer. Passivation is the process of making a material "passive" in relation to another material prior to using the materials together. This layer is a structure only a few atoms thick and is very dense, preventing diffusion of oxygen into the underlying material. (In iron or plain carbon steels the oxygen migrates into the underlying material, causing rust.)

In a marine enviroment, should we grease stainless steel bolt & nuts to prevent corrosion?
Q. I am concern as I am wondering if it is advisable to grease stainless steel bolts and nuts so as to ward off corrosion if I am not conducting regular periodic maintaince. Also will applying grease actually make it worse?

A. Stainless Steel requires Passivation to reduce oxidation. You'll find many methods here, It's a temporary solution in that if the surfaced is scratched it nullifies the process, Grease should only be used to reduce friction it's counter productive in rust prevention. Any trapped air can produce water through condensation. The grease traps the moisture and promotes corrosion in the parent steel.
