Why are my oscars hanging around the surface of the water?
Q. I have 2 oscars and lately all they've been doing is hanging around the surface of the water. Also I bought some comet feeders today and 6 have died and are floating around but not because of the oscars. The rest of the feeders are hanging at the surface as well. Whats wrong with my fish/water?

A. Sound like they are not getting enough oxygen. You need to do a few things. 1) Do a 1/3 water change 2) Change your filter cartridge 3) Increase the aeration 4) Check the temp - you may need to lower it a bit. Oscars should be ok in the 70-75 degree F range. Anything above that may be too hot. I hope it works out. I used to have Oscars, they are great fish and have a ton of personality.

What is the longest you kept two oscars in a thirty gallon tank?
Q. I have two large oscars in a thirty gallon tank and I wonder how long they can stay in there. They are alittle over a year old now and quite large.

A. How big? Two fish in 30 gallons seems fine...that's one fish per 15 gallons and unless they are approaching massive proportions then they should be quite happy.

What fish are easy to keep that get quite big something like oscars or catfish?
Q. Hi i am wondering about getting some fish that will grow at the biggest about 18 inches and are easy to look after? Something like oscars or a kind of catfish?

A. Oscars only grow to about 12 to 14 inches. Most big fish are easy to keep, if you have a really huge tank or pond for them. For an 18-inch fish, I'd say you'd need at least a 500-gallon tank. They are sometimes kept in smaller tanks (200 to 300 gallons), but the maintenance is more difficult and the fish is more stressed in such cramped quarters. Here are a few fish in the size range you stated. Please read up on care of the individual species before you get one. Giant Gourami (Osphronemus goramy) Managuense (Paratheraps managuense) Wolf Cichlid (Paratheraps dovii) Peacock Bass (Cichla species) Giant African Yellowbelly Cichlid (Boulengerochromis microlepis) Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) Clown knife fish (Chitala or Notopterus… [cont.]

Can oscars or pacu see the food i put in?
Q. I have two oscars and pacus in a 55 gallon tank. I just put them in from my old tank. When i put food in, they seem to not see it. I knwo they are hungry bc i didn't feed them for a day and a half. the food seems to float in the corners.

A. Yes they can see the food. They may just still be a little stressed from the move. Good luck with the Pacu's they get HUGE. I don't think they should sell them in pet stores. I had 2 red bellied pacu for 3 years and had to re-home them after 24 inches. Not sure what you feed them but the pacu will eat zucchini, peas, carrots, Brazil nuts, banana, and apples. good luck.

Q. Thinking about getting some baby (around 2 inch) oscars for a new 4 foot tank (around 140 litres) how many could i fit in it bearing in mind that I am going to keep them until they are quite large. And a fluval 304 external filter for filteration (for 300 litre tanks) Thanks alot ok looks like i wont be getting any then! wot cud i get?

A. That tank is only 35 gallons, the minimum for 1 oscar is 55 gallons, and 75 gallons is better. for more that 1 oscar you need a 100+ gallon tank. No, you can not even put 1 oscar in there. You can look into dwarf cichlids, a community thnk of those would be cool!

What are good cichlids to get that grow to the size of tiger oscars or smaller?
Q. Hi i am thinking about getting a six foot tank about 90 or 100 gallons and i am wondering what cichlids are good to get that would mix with oscars and grow to there size or smaller?
Asked by unknown - Wed Jul 22 11:43:27 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Just so you know, cichlids are territorial, and most of them would rather not be stuffed into a tank with fish that would normally be an enemy. Mixing new world cichids is always risky and never shows them at their best. Mixed tanks usually lead to aggression as the fish grow and mature, and a mixed cichlid tank the best anyone can hope for is a tank in which the fish 'get along' - meaning they survive. Unfortunately I notice a lot of people recommend mixes because it's worked for a week or a month or a few months. They don't understand the nature of these fish and how it changes when they grow up and mature. If you want to experience what keeping cichlids is really about and see their best behaviour and colours you will choose one… [cont.]

How big an aquarium should i get for 2 oscars?
Q. Hi every one i'am an aquarium enthusiast. I want to get 2 oscars from Petsmart.I asked the person who worked in the fish department how many gallons minimum they require and he didn't know. I've tried looking it up online and all the sites i can find only say get a tank that can hold several hundred pounds. I'm guessing a 100 gallon to 120 maybe?Thank you!

A. 100 or 120 is the size you should be looking at.(90gal+ anyway) Be aware that if you end up with 2 males they may not get along in even that size tank. It's also impossible to sex the baby ones. A pair or 2 females are probably fine. Ian

A. Most plecos and catfish are not good tank mates for Oscars. Oscars will try to eat about anything and they do have rather large mouths. Oscars can die from getting plecos and catfish stuck inside their mouths due to a spiked fins. In that size tank, you are really better off leaving it alone. Even plecos too large to be food can get picked on. In response to the person claiming that aquarists do not use vets below, I have this to say. I have seen four fatalities involving plecos and Oscars. In those cases, the large Oscars have tried to eat large plecos and both times the two fish have died. I have also had to take a catfish out of an Oscar, in which case the Oscar survived but that catfish did not. Also, I have learned from much… [cont.]

What Kind of Fish Make Good Tankmates for Oscars?
Q. I know it can't be anything to small cause the Oscars will eat it but I'm not sure what else would be OK? I have 2 oscars in a 55 gallon tank.
Asked by CatC90 - Mon Jan 21 12:02:32 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You had best leave it as is. A 55 gallon is pretty tight for even just two Oscars (and if it seems like there's plenty of room right now, it's because they must be young still - two adults in that tank will remind you of the crammed tanks at the fish market - the ones sold for food). Even a 75 gallon doesn't cut it for tankmates, except perhaps a single pleco, it's the same as a 55 gallon but with more depth, making more room for the Oscars, but not really for other fish. First make sure you have two Oscars that will be compatible for the long term. If yours are a pair, you're all set. But if you just got two random Oscars the chances are in favour of them starting to fight over the tank at some point as they mature, and then you will… [cont.]

what kind of fish do oscars get along with?
Q. i have 3 large oscars and i want to put more fish in it, i have them in a 75 gallon tank.
Asked by Frank B - Tue Jul 1 23:19:52 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. In that tank, nothing. You really need to be looking at a 150 gallon tank AT LEAST! Each of those fish should top 16", and will produce horrible amounts of waste, requiring FAR more dilution than your current tank, and even then, you will REALLY have to stay on top of your water changes. Until you get into the 200 gallon zone, don't even think about adding more fish. EDIT: Rams and Kribs are almost entirely assured food for the Oscars, assuming they survive long enough, braving through the ammonia levels from the Oscars.

ok to keep feeder fish in a 2.5 gallon filtered aquarium until they are fed to my two 11 inch oscars?
Q. I have been keeping a large stock of feeders in a 20 gallon aquarium for several years, but I would like to convert this 20 gallon into a community with livebearers and such, maybe 2-3 dwarf gouramis. Could I just use an old 2.5 gallon aquarium and hold feeders in there? I could restock feeders once every 2 weeks and my oscars eat 2 feeders a piece everyday, along with flakes and a few pieces of cooked ground beef. I guess I would be keeping around 30 feeders in a 2.5 gallon. so overcrowded. lmao. My oscars are held in a 200 gallon by themselves. they havent got hole in head disease yet, so I'm not gonna worry about it

A. LOL; feeding your oscar fish does not cause hole in the head; thats caused by neglect. 30 may be too many for a 2.5 gallon depending on their size; you may have a great lose of feeders before you get a chance to feed him/her. If anything I would stock it and then not refill it until it's empty; it wouldn't be fair if a fish happened too stay in their for a few months because it happened not too be selected. I know their feeders; but a long torture id not fair. I say since the number will consistently dwindle its fine to overstock; just feed the older fish before the newer. GL

What should I do with the Oscars?
Q. I got a 100 gal tank with the stand and canister filters from off of craigslist for only $50 but I had to take the fish with it. The tank have 10 Oscars and the poor fish have hardly any room to swim around. What should i do with the Oscars? I want to break the tank down and redo it. I want to find them a great home because they really deserve it after being crowded in this tank.

A. You can A: Talk to your local fish stores, see if they will take some or all, maybe give you some store credit or something to that effect. B. Take pictures, post on craigslist, cichlid-forum.com trading post, nycichlids.com, eastcoastcichlids.org, gcca.com ect...basically sites that are specific to cichlid keepers. You'd be surprised at people looking for even common fish. Post you'd prefer local pick up only, and if you are willing or not to ship, and if yes, buyer pays shipping.

Can I keep a flowerhorn with 2 oscars?
Q. I've two oscars and a few other cichlids and they are in a 125 gallon tank with lots of hiding spots such as caves and big trees. Now, I want to buy a 6 inch female flowerhorn to keep with my oscars. Is it possible to keep them? They will have enough space and hiding place in case of emergency.

A. it's true flowerhorns are aggressive and they will likely dominate the tank.but considering that you have a big tank and you said that it has hiding places and some other cichlids, your oscars can go well.first, they can hide, then there are other cichlids that can take away the flowerhorn's attention from the oscars. my girlfriend has an oscar and flowerhorn, and i observed that the flowerhorn somehow ignores the oscar and concentrates his aggressiveness on the cichlids that have similar shape as his.but this doesn't guarantee that your flowerhorn won't hurt your oscars.after all fish have different personalities.
