What is a good video camera for short films?
Q. I am a short film maker in California, and I really need a better camera. I've been using a Sony DCR-SR62, but have been looking to upgrade for a while. I do not care about price, brand or size. I just need a better camera so that my short films come out looking their best. Thanks for any advice.

What kind of video camera should i get for short films??
Q. I am a beginner and wanna start filming short films except i need a video camera. I dont really know much terminology and need some serious help. I want a camera in which you can film on and then upload it all on your computer and make it on a dvd or something. I have a windows XP so i would need something compatible with that. I only have around $200-$500 to spend on the camera so i need something cheap yet it is a good camera (good sound, video, lighting, etc.) So can anyone help me with what camera i should get?

A. A miniDV camera is your best bet. They are cheaper than DVD or hard drive camcorders, but have the best video quality. Without knowing more information, I can't give you a specific model, but here are some things to consider. Look for one that has high optical zoom, 20-25x is good. Don't worry about digital zoom. As far as brand, I have had great experience with Canon, but most any brand should fine. To capture the video to your computer, you will need a firewire cable and a firewire port on your computer. Many camcorders do not come with a firewire cable, so you may have to buy one. If you don't have a firewire port, you can buy an adapter card that will fit into a PCI slot on your motherboard.

A. Theatre all the way! Start with theatre training and than just take workshops and classes to help you learn the film style. Plus it's easier to get into theatre due to community and school which is everywhere, than film which is generally concentrated to specific cities.

What are some good public domain stories to adapt to short films?
Q. I want to shoot a short film and I am looking for a good story that I can use that hasn't already been used or barely used. Any suggestions?

A. How about The Trial for Murder by Charles Dickens? It is very short and quite good. There is also The Signal-Man by Charles Dickens; also very short and excellent. As far as I know, The Signal-Man was made once a long time ago and The Trial for Murder never. If you wanted slightly longer stories which would require more actors, you may be interested in either The Chimes by Charles Dickens (it was made into a silent film in 1914, but that's it) or The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain by Charles Dickens (which hasn't been made) You may want to check this site which has some classic short stories. Then you could check IMDB to see if it has been made into a movie. I hope this helps.

A. Films are ordinarily made by a team. The person responsible for seeing that the film gets completed is called a producer and the one who directs the day-to-day events is called a director. On a short film or music video you would likely be called a producer/director. WK

Creating web site to screen my short films?
Q. I just finished an evening film school program, and have several short films (including sync audio) for which I want to create a web site so friends/family can watch the movies. I considered just using YouTube, but while convenient, it isn't the highest quality. So basically, I'm looking to have people I invite go to my site, click on the video, and it plays. Any suggestions on how/where to look to set this up? Thank you !!!

A. The reason youtube isnt hight quality is because the video is streaming and so the quality is sacrificed so it can be played in real time, theres no point streaming high quality vids as most people wont be able to stream it and will have to buffer every few seconds. In this case you may aswell just put the movie files up as files for download on your site so people can get them then watch it all at once in perfect quality with no pauses in between. If you really want to stream them, in high quality then you are best off writing a flash program to this (which is how youtube works) or googling around to try and find one, but you are probably best off with either embedded youtube videos or direct download, theres no point reinventing the… [cont.]

A. Short answer no, with a big BUT! You don't need to have credits in smaller movies to land a role in a major film, BUT you do need to have a combination of talent/skills/ and looks that the production may be looking for. Long answer short, fi you have little to no experience with recognizable movie credits, there is often times very little chance that a CD will bother wasting time to see you at all for an audition, UNLESS you fit the look of the character exactly. It's happened before and it will happen again, just don't bank your career on it happening to you. Does posting short films online damage or lower your credibility as an aspiring actress or director?
Q. Today almost everybody can make a short film and post it online. But do people take seriously the actors and directors who make this shorts when trying to make it? Or do they see them like a lot of casting crews see the people who do reality shows, you know like they aren't real actors. You know they look down on them. I just wanted to know what you thought about it. I want to make short films too as a hobby but aspire to be a serious actress.

A. If you aren't doing anything, no one sees you. If you look at the indie movement over the past 20 years or so, you'll notice that a considerable number of folks started there and are now working in the big leagues. As far as being a serious actress, you have to act. You need to take every oppurtunity to practice your craft. Look at every "serious actress" you admire and find out where they began. If you look a the great actresses of stage and screen, you'll find they came from every conceivable background, have done every kind of job and been discovered in just as many different ways. How many of today's serious actress' can trace their livelyhoods to a toothpaste commercial, shampoo commercial, donut shop commercial, off-off-off… [cont.]

With a 1 gig card I can record for about an hour. It has a 12x zoom, and you can use the zoom while you're shooting. And it records sound in stereo! And I find that often when I'm out taking pictures there are things that look better on a 1 or 2 minute video. But if I was primarily interested in making videos, I'd buy a video camera. For one thing, it would be nice to have one with a mic. jack, so you could use a mic. closer to the subject. DV or mini-DV would be easier to download and edit, and probably have better resolution. A. Have you tried Windows Movie Maker ? Not sure how much 'quality' you're needing, but I'd say it will work. WMM has some glitches, I'm sure you'll find them if you get into it enough. Movie Maker is free from Microsoft For XP ... see For Vista ... see movie maker 6 movie maker 2.6
